Hapuku Lodge is set on a working deer farm, just a few kilometers inland from the Pacific Ocean and nestled against the backdrop of the Seaward Kaikoura mountain range. The area is renowned for its diverse marine life, including whales, dolphins, and seals, as well as its dramatic landscapes that range from rugged mountains to rolling farmland and coastal views.
Hapuku Lodge offers several types of accommodations, but the most unique are the Tree Houses
These elevated cabins are built among the native Kanuka trees, around 30 feet (10 meters) above the ground. They offer breathtaking views of both the mountains and the ocean. Each treehouse features floor-to-ceiling windows, a fireplace, a deep soaking tub, and a balcony that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings.
The lodge also offers luxurious suites and a large Olive House Suite that is ideal for families or groups. All accommodations are elegantly designed with natural materials, including handcrafted furniture made from native woods.
The lodge features a superb on-site restaurant that focuses on farm-to-table dining. The chefs use locally sourced ingredients, including produce from the lodge’s own organic garden, fresh seafood from Kaikoura, and venison from the deer farm. The menu changes seasonally, and guests can enjoy their meals in a dining room that offers stunning views of the mountains and surrounding landscape.
Some of the nearby activities include:
Whale Watching – Kaikoura is one of the best places in the world to see sperm whales, with tours operating year-round.
Dolphin and Seal Encounters – You can swim with dolphins or visit seal colonies along the coast.
Hiking – The area offers numerous hiking trails, including those in the nearby Kaikoura Ranges, where you can explore native bush and alpine scenery.
Surfing and Beach Walks – The lodge is close to some great surf spots and beautiful beaches.
