Caracol is the largest known Maya archaeological site in Belize, located in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve in the Cayo District. It is one of the most significant and historically important Maya sites in Central America.
It was a major city-state in the Maya civilization, flourishing between AD 250 and 950 during the Classic period. At its peak, it is believed to have had a population of over 100,000 people, making it one of the largest Maya cities.
The tallest structure at Caracol and one of the largest man-made structures in Belize. It stands about 140 feet (43 meters) tall and consists of pyramids and palaces, offering panoramic views of the surrounding jungle.
The journey to Caracol involves traveling through dense forested areas. The road can be rough, especially during the rainy season, so it’s recommended to visit with a guided tour or in a robust vehicle.
