Bacalar Lagoon, also known as the “Lake of Seven Colors,” is a stunning freshwater lake located in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It gets its name from the varying shades of blue and turquoise waters that are caused by differing depths and the presence of white limestone on the lake bed.
The lagoon’s vibrant colors range from deep navy blue to bright turquoise, creating a mesmerizing effect. The clarity of the water is due to the lake’s low levels of sediment and pollutants, and its white limestone bottom reflects sunlight in various hues.
Several operators offer boat tours that take visitors around the lagoon, highlighting its various cenotes, canals, and unique ecosystems.
There is also a range of accommodations available, from budget hostels to luxury eco-resorts, many of which offer direct access to the lagoon.
Bacalar is easily accessible by road from major cities in Quintana Roo, such as Chetumal (about 40 km away) and Tulum (about 200 km away). There are also bus services that connect Bacalar to other parts of the Yucatán Peninsula.
Visitors can also enjoy local cuisine that includes fresh seafood and traditional Mexican dishes, often served in lakeside restaurants with stunning views.
