The El Djem Amphitheatre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.
It is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world and one of the largest, with a seating capacity estimated to be between 35,000 and 40,000 spectators.
Today, the amphitheatre is a major tourist attraction in Tunisia.
Visitors can explore the seating tiers, the arena, and the underground passages where gladiators and animals were held before the contests.
El Djem is accessible by road and rail, making it a convenient day trip from other Tunisian cities like Sousse or Tunis.
