Trakai Island Castle was constructed in the 14th century by Grand Duke Kęstutis and completed by his son Vytautas the Great in the early 15th century. The castle was strategically built on an island in Lake Galvė to serve as a defensive stronghold against the Teutonic Knights and other invaders.
After falling into disrepair in the 17th century, the castle underwent significant restoration in the 20th century. Today, it stands as a well-preserved monument showcasing the architectural and cultural heritage of medieval Lithuania.
The castle’s location on an island in Lake Galvė offers breathtaking views and a tranquil setting. Visitors can enjoy boat rides around the lake, walk along the picturesque pathways, and explore the nearby town of Trakai, known for its colorful wooden houses and rich multicultural heritage.
Trakai Island Castle is easily accessible from Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, located about 28 kilometers away. Visitors can reach Trakai by car, bus, or train.
