Bardenas Reales is a unique natural park and semi-desert region located in the southeast of Navarre, Spain. Covering approximately 42,000 hectares (about 104,000 acres), it is renowned for its striking landscapes, which feature dramatic cliffs, plateaus, and eroded hills.
The area is characterized by its semi-desert terrain, with eroded formations created by wind and water over millions of years. This includes canyons, ravines, and isolated hills known as cabezos.
The region has an arid climate with sparse vegetation, contributing to its stark, almost lunar appearance.
Part of Bardenas Reales is used as a military training ground. This has been a point of contention but also adds a layer of historical and contemporary interest to the region.
The park is accessible year-round, with visitor centers providing information on trails, guided tours, and regulations to ensure the protection of the area.
