Tusheti is a remote and enchanting region in northeastern Georgia, renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty, traditional way of life, and rich cultural heritage.
The region is extremely remote, accessible mainly via a rugged mountain road that traverses the Abano Pass, which is one of the highest drivable mountain passes in the Caucasus at 2,850 meters (9,350 feet). This road is often only passable during the summer months due to snow and weather conditions.
Some of the main places to see in the area include:
Omalo – The administrative center of Tusheti, Omalo is divided into two parts: Lower Omalo and Upper Omalo. It is known for its medieval defensive towers (Keselo Towers) and traditional stone houses.
Shenako – A picturesque village known for its well-preserved traditional architecture and the old church of the Holy Trinity.
Dartlo – Famous for its ancient stone houses, Dartlo is a UNESCO World Heritage candidate and features a unique, untouched medieval atmosphere.
Kvavlo and Dano – These villages offer stunning views and are known for their traditional Tushetian defensive towers.
Despite its remoteness, Tusheti offers a range of guesthouses and family-run accommodations where visitors can experience genuine Tushetian hospitality.
